Book Review: With a Voice that is Often Still Confused But is Becoming Ever Louder and Clearer

Ya, that’s a long title.

(Wouldn’t it be awesome if that was all I put for my review? Then the title would have been like a thousand times longer than the actual review for the book … if only I was so bold).

HamantaschenBut, in truth, this short story collection is worthy of a good review. This was my first dip into Hamantaschen’s world of words, and immediately I recognized I was in good hands. This guy can write. And the breadth of the stories within this collection is quite impressive, ranging from tales of depression to murderous authors to crapping in bathrooms. No seriously.

What impressed me the most, however, was how each story was so different, told from a completely unique perspective. Sure, there’s some blood and guts thrown in for good measure, but ultimately these stories are about people, and Hamantaschen shines with his ability to bring these characters to life. Crisp dialogue, clean writing, fresh metaphors and ideas; there’s a lot to love in this collection.

My favorite tale of the bunch was “Soon Enough This Will Essentially Be A True Story.” That story alone is worth clicking away at an <Order Me> button, but there are plenty of others that carry significant weight as well. The only thing I wanted more out of this collection was tighter endings. A lot of the stories had these great build-ups but then fizzled out at the end, without wrapping everything together with, you know, the string and the little bow with the curly Q’s that you do with the scissors somehow that make the ribbons look like tiny Slinkys?

If you’re looking for a short story collection unlike anything you’ve ever read, look no further. Definitely worth the investment of time. I look forward to what the author comes up with next and would love to see what he can do with a novel or novella.

** Thanks to the author for providing me with a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. This in no way influenced my review. This one’s worth checking out. **
